Peppers a Plenty

I'll admit it. I'm a pepper junky. Sweet peppers, hot peppers, scorching peppers, fried peppers, rajas, pickled jalapenos... I can't get enough of em'... and this means we've got a pepper selection here at the Co-op that can satisfy my (and my coworker/members') cravings.

So, here's our current pepper line-up!

Sweet peppers: We have  Corno di Toro Sweet Frying Peppers (THE grilling pepper) and Jimmy Nardello Sweet peppers (beautiful funky sweet and fruity)

Frying Peppers: We have some excellent local Pasilla Peppers (think rajas and chile rellenos) grown by Ebby's Organics here in Goleta.

Hot & Scorching Hot Peppers: This last week we tried out a new "Mix and Match Hot Peppers" set that everyone seemed to like, so I'm going to try convincing Jack (the farmer) from Ellwood Canyon Farm to sell us another batch of his incredible Cayennes, Hungarian Hot Wax, Jalapenos, and Habaneros.
We also always have Ebby's Organics Jalapenos, which are great too.

Bell Peppers: Even our Bell Peppers are LOCAL. We have Reds, Greens, and some of the most delicious Orange Bell Peppers from Givens Farms. These orange peppers honestly taste like sweet sunshine. I eat them raw.

Halloween is coming...

...and we will have LOCAL PUMPKINS! I've been talking to Shawn McMahon from Out of Step farms and he has pumpkins aplenty. Right now, we plan on buying Sugar Pies and Jack-o-Lanterns.

One thing, for all you long time Co-opers that remember our awesome pumpkin patches from previous years... we might not be able to make one this year :( With all the construction planned in the next 3 weeks its just not feasible.

SO, look for your local pumpkins inside, under the produce rack beginning next week!

Local Pomegranate Delivery

This morning our friend/ local grower George Emery showed up to the co-op with 70 pounds of beautiful pomegranates! I just tasted one and they're great so i'll be putting them on the shelf later today.

So, local unsprayed Pomegranate now $2.99/ lb here at the Co-op!

New Produce!

So much awesome produce this week... I mean I think that every week, but yay this week!!!

First and foremost: Jimmy Nardello Peppers!!!
Eat em' raw (fruity and sweet) or fry em' up (delicious and creamy, no bitterness). I'm pretty sure this is my personal favorite pepper... but its hard to pick favorites :)
I'll have a basic recipe up for these soon...

Furthermore: Jimmy Nardello Peppers are on MEMBER SALE!!!
So, they cost $6.99/lb for members and $7.99/lb for non-members! And FYI, these are light peppers, so a pound of them goes a long way (I'd say all the peppers in that ^ picture add up to about 2-3 pounds).

Friday Night Recipe!

Stir Fried Sweet Potatoes

I'm a huge fan of sweet potatoes (the Co-op has em next to the bananas) and this recipe is super easy... and yummy. I ditched the processor and used a cheese grater...

New Produce!

Concord Grapes!

Concord grapes are the original in "grape" flavor. Basically, its what all those crazy grape candies want to taste like, but a million times better.
Come in for a sample! Currently $3.49/ lb.

Local Costata Romanesco Zucchini!

This is my favorite type of zucchini, and Given's Farm does a great job growing it. There's about a million ways to prepare it, so here's a link on some general ways to cook this delicious summer squash.
If you have some time poke around in this website, it has some pretty good standard produce info.
